Holy Human Hybrid – Discipline

Hebrews 12:7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate children at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had parents who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 Our parents disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that we are God’s children – we are not just adopted into God’s family as foreigners, but we are adopted back into His family – we were His to begin with – we were created in His image so we have His imprint on our hearts. But not only this, we are also recreated to become more like Him through the process of being made holy. When we were part of the family of the world, we had a worldly spirit – but when we are brought back into God’s family we receive the Holy Spirit. With the help of the Hoy Spirit we can be holy as God is holy. We are being changed, but not completely. We are a holy-human hybrid. A human who is set apart, different, unique, other-worldly, no longer of this world.

As children of God we participate in this process of change – we can cooperate with the transformation or we can fight against it. Our human nature can take on the nature of God or we can confine God’s nature to certain realms of our lives, to certain portions of our psyche, to certain places and activites – or we can hide it within altogether and keep it locked tight in a secret place that no one can see except God alone. Whatever we choose, God still works to move us in the direction of becoming more like Him and one of the ways we are changed is through hardship. “Endure hardship as disciplie.” It’s a training ground, an agent of change, a catalyst, a greenhouse for growth in holiness – for later on it produces a harvest – a harvest of holiness.
