Holy Human Hybrid – Holiness

“Be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16 quoted from the Old Testament, possibly Leviticus 11:44

I have wrestled with this verse for many years now and wish I could go back to school and study the original Hebrew and Greek to help me understand this better. My two main questions about this simple verse are:

1. Is this a command or a description?

2. What does it mean to be holy?

When I first read this as a young follower of Christ I wrote a little song to help me remember it:

Be ye holy, be ye holy, be ye holy for the Lord God is holy Himself.
Be sanctified in your soul, willingly choosing His will.
Offer your life a sacrifice, holy and pleasing to Him.
Be ye holy, be ye holy, be ye holy for the Lord God is holy Himself.

Today I don’t feel very holy. And that’s OK. We live in a very unholy world, and we have three very unholy influences constantly vying for our attention – the world we live in, the demonic spiritual influences in the unseen realm, and our corrupted bodies. If we are surrounded with all this unholiness, is it too much to expect holiness from me? My answer today is NO! Along with the influences of unholiness, we are also influenced for holiness. First and foremost – we are holy in our core. When God looks at us he doesn’t see our unholy flesh – he looks through the filter of our spirit and sees that which has been made clean by the blood of Jesus. We have His nature within us – and He is holy, so therefore we are holy – pure, made clean, set apart. We also have the influence of the Holy Spirit and ministering angels in the unseen realm, and the community of other followers of Jesus who have been made holy.

Whether “be holy” is a command or a statement of our condition as followers of Christ, there is an aspect of cooperation in our lives that requires action on our part. Being holy is not about following a set of rules and regulations like it was in Old Testament times, but rather it is about being like Jesus. The call to be holy is not in reference to the Law – but in reference to the Law Giver who is also the Giver of Life. Our part in holiness is to cooperate with the new life that is working in us to conform us to the image of Christ.
